Its Time is Over (Review of Hotmail)

 Author: John K.
Review of: Hotmail

Hotmail was a great trailblazer on the web. It offered free web-based email to anyone. Then, ads started to filter in. Bills had to be paid. Email isn't free to provide, though it may be free to the user. We all understood. It was fine, but by that time, web-based email services were a dime a dozen.

Then, Google came along, with the best web-based email service in the history of history, and literally slammed the door on the hotmail model. Ever since, hotmail has been playing catch-up, and poorly, at that. Flashing, annoying, intrusive ads abound, as they grasp for whatever ad revenue they can get, while Google runs circles around them for giving users what they want.

Hotmail, as it is now, is one of the last things I would deliberately use, and would never earn a recommendation by yours truly, without making a lot of changes.

Eclectic Downtown Watering Hole (Review of Harry's Country Club Bar)

Seamlessly blending a 1940s honkytonk roadhouse with an urban destination, Harry's has turned the River Market into even more of a destination for people all over the metro. The classily uniformed staff are always helpful and friendly, eager to answer your questions. A good selection of draught, bottled, and canned beers are available, along with one of KC's best tandem tequila, bourbon, and scotch selections, at sometimes surprisingly low prices.

The $2.75 appetizers, as well, are not to be missed.

River Market Mainstay (Review of Cup & Saucer On Delaware Street Inc)

This place originated as a coffee shop that just happened to serve lots of alcohol too. Then, they broke into the next building, and opened a bona fide coffee shop, serving some of KC's best breakfasts. The original bar area is still very much open though, but the espresso machines therein are still quite operational.

"The Cup," as it's locally known, is a great place to gather, at almost any time of the day or night, over a latte or a Boulevard Stout.

Worth the Uphill/Downhill walk (Review of Jilly's)

 Review of: Jilly's

An interesting mix of clientèle make Jilly's a frequent destination for their Kansas City evenings. Named for a late friend of the late Frank Sinatra, Jilly's is never the same, from one night to the next. There is usually a cover on heavy nights, but they don't usually start collecting it until well after dark, so career flies shouldn't have any trouble.

Well worth the trip, almost any night of the week. Ask for the $2 "Jilly's Brew," which is actually just Leinie's Red.

This is a bar with personality. The music is always excellent. There is a bohemian divey atmosphere that makes just about anyone feel at ease as they enjoy the cheap drinks and Trivia "Riot," every Friday night.

The Kansas City Cheesesteak is not to be missed, nor are the fantastic advertisement fliers for upcoming rock shows, found on every table.

A Big Band Dive (Review of Harling's Upstairs Bar & Grill)

Review of: Harling's Upstairs Bar & Grill

Sitting on a shady corner, just outside of the typical Westport clubber's reach and reckoning, Harling's claims to be an Irish pub, but the only Irish things about this midtown cash-only bar are a choice in stouts, and cider on tap.

However, a purported Irish denomination is not what brings people in the door and up the stairs. When you walk in the door, there isn't a single person sitting at the bar who won't have a nightlong conversation with you, including the bartender. The hospitality and friendliness is infectious, too. Once you sit, you're eager for another stranger to sit next to you, so the whole process can start over.

Also, Tuesday nights play host to the Boulevard Big Band, a unique no-cover event in which a full big band plays for a couple of hours. Harling's is fast becoming one of my favorite bars in Kansas City. It's definitely worth a try.

KC's Best Philly (Review of Grinders)

 Review of: Grinders

There is no such thing as a bad experience at Grinders. Located a little bit off the beaten path, by a couple blocks, on 18th, this place was opened in late 2004 by STRETCH, a local metal sculptor with world renown, in an attempt to create the kind of place he'd like to go, starting with the often imitated, but never duplicated South Philly sandwich(available with cheddar, provolone, or the authentic wiz).

Other bars have followed suit because of the wild popularity of it, but this was the first place in KC, or even the region, to serve Unibroue's delicious Maudite beer, on draught, alongside their already impressive selection.

Out the back door is the sculpture garden, in which a half dozen of STRETCH's massive creations sit, waiting to be climbed on by unruly patrons. The garden also offers a very good skyline view of Crown Center, and downtown in the other direction.

Quality Hill's Neighborhood Dive (Review of Peanut Downtown the)

 Review of: Peanut Downtown the

Kansas City loves its dive bars, and Kansas City definitely loves the Peanut. Tucked away on 9th St, next to a popular Mexican restaurant, the Peanut mostly attracts ever-increasing neighborhood residents, and doesn't see quite as much lunch or dinner business as nearby Tanner's or the Quaff.

A generous draught selection lines different corners of the back of the bar, and the shifty bartenders double as DJs, jockeying their own CDs, and occasionally fixing skips.

The Peanut is always a fun place to go, and proudly serves Kansas City's best BLT.

I have been to this place a number of times, and they've always been friendly. However, when I walk in, I say to myself, "I am definitely not Italian." Anthony's is a standard for a lot of the old Italian families in Kansas City, with Paul Anka, Tony Bennett, and other old standards playing on the sound system, almost all the time. It's also one of downtown's only bars with a 3am license.

Midtown/Plaza/Downtown's grocery store (Review of Sun Fresh Markets)

 Review of: Sun Fresh Markets

As the only really pleasant grocery store within a reasonable distance of the homes of hundreds of thousands, Sunfresh is a very busy store. Located in Westport, the selection is constantly expanding, but for boring people like, me, the frozen stuff is also available in abundance.

For being the only real option for groceries, for many people, it is still a very nice place to shop.
